Masonite Beams Selected for New Isle of Man Government Dept.
The TRADIS® closed panel wall and roof system featuring Masonite’s I-Beams and Excel’s Warmcel® 500 insulation has been selected for the new HQ of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry on the Isle of Man. The building, due for completion in early 2010, has been designed to minimise the impact on the environment by maximising the use of natural ventilation and lighting. Once completed, the roof on the west side of the building will be covered with a sedum blanket which filters out pollutants from the air and absorbs carbon dioxide. The building will be heated by a district heating system, a wood-chip boiler fuelled and sited at a nearby sawmill. The new HQ will centralise the department's six divisions and will be one of the first office eco-developments on the island.

The dominant form of the building takes its precedent from agricultural barns and will be built using mainly timber and glass so that it appears to blend into the surrounding landscape. It will incorporate 1800 sq.m. of open plan office accommodation on two floor levels.

Karen Horncastle of Ashley Pettit Architects, who selected the TRADIS® system for the new DAFF HQ, comments:

“Research revealed that the system could fulfill the sustainability criteria of the project, which was an important part of the client's brief.”

TRADIS® is a closed panel wall and roof system which is pre-insulated to provide thermal performance to the highest standard. It is suitable for housing, educational buildings, offices and any other buildings for which high thermal performance is required. The TRADIS® system is a great example of one which offers off-site construction benefits and is pointing the way forward for wall and roof building methods. The system is available nationally via a network of Masonite stockists.

The architects have been working on the project with Eden Frame, the Cumbria based sustainable building company. One of the main advantages of the system is the fact that it is produced off-site.
